This is a very original piece and its very hard to part with this one! There's a little bit of a backstory behind this unusual find...
I discovered this amazing piece at a vintage rummage sale and was drawn into it's overall craziness but it was in quite bad shape with some yellowing and staining from being stored. Something about the piece reminded me of something and I had a brainwave about the "Jenny Kee & Linda Jackson" Step into Paradise Exhibition I'd seen earlier in the year. Well looking through my pictures I saw all the very same symbols and logos in one of Jenny Kee's paintings at the exhibition, "Rainforest Dreaming 1990". I was researching into whether I could substantiate the dress as an original Jenny Kee and posted up on my instagram about the dress and my investigations. Well goodness me I wasn't expecting a reply from the legendary designer herself! As you can see her reply was rather kind and lovely:
It definitely not some rare piece from her archive which has been missing for years. There is an absolute possibility that this is a 'homage' piece to Jenny Kee and replicated without her knowledge or copyright given. There's also a possibility that it has been made using one of the many knitting books with her designs in (although it has commercial care labels and you can see there was a proper label at one point). It is quite probably been made under contract at an overseas factory when her brand name was licensed.
But what it is is a rather fabulous and unusual dress - absolutely perfect for wearing for a gallery party and absolutely a talking point that will give so much pleasure. I'd keep this for my very own fashion archive if I had the storage but this item needs to be shown and loved and enjoyed rather than sitting in a dusty loft!
Brand: Label has come unstitched - Unsubstantiated Jenny Kee has commercial care label in side as pictured.
Good vintage condition. Has been in storage many years so was some yellowing but most has washed out & faded when line dried.
